The photo above could represent a life-saving procedure to rescue a terminally ill patient who needs a new lung or liver. But what if the container held a human head? Would that seem so noble? Well, a 30-year-old Russian man, Valery Spiridonov, announced that he will become the subject of the first human head transplant. Because his lower boy suffers a debilitating disease, he will have his head removed and installed on another person’s body. A team of 150 doctors, led by an Italian physician, will perform the 36-hour operation to transplant Spiridonov’s functional head to a recipient who is brain dead but with a healthy body. Even if the head and body accept each other, what will happen to the brain? Critics suggest that with two sets of body chemistry uniting, the result could be some kind of new mental illness. Spiridonov might live with a healthy body and have a crazy mind.
I also have to wonder: What if either the body or mind has demons? Will the body get the demons of the transplanted head? Will the head/mind/soul consciousness get the demons of the new body? Plus, the folly of submitting to such a procedure could combine the curses from both head and body to result in a life of unspeakable torment. Either way it seems like medical science, in this case, is playing God with Valery assuming the role of a Frankenstein-like existence, should he actually live. You have to wonder what other diabolically ingenious acts the devil has planned in a world were ethical boundaries are falling fast.
An encouraging word: HIS STRENGTH
When struggles come, where is the hope of a Christian? “You armed me with strength for battle,” Psalm 18:39 declares. Victory is nearer when we realize that we cannot do it on our own. The flesh is too weak. Our faith is often not sufficient. That’s when HIS STRENGTH takes over. He deals with the failures, betrayals, hurts, disappointments, pain, and losses of our lives. God knows the battle you are in today. He understands the frailty of your human condition. And he wants to equip you with His strength to survive and thrive. Let Him do it.
