The story has circulated since President Trump’s Inauguration, January 21, last year. Now the account is gaining steam with at least one pastor claiming inside information that First Lady Melania Trump demanded an exorcism of the White House before she’d move in. According to the uncorroborated account, she had priests and pastors anoint the place with oil. The problem, according to this story, was images of gods and idols from the Obama days and Haitian witchcraft influences from the Clinton era. (The Clintons spent their honeymoon in Haiti and visited a Voodoo ceremony, an event Bill Clinton admitted to in his book “My Life.”) Melania, a devout Catholic, wanted the demonic stuff out and her new home cleansed. Since all these claims are off-the-record, it’s hard to know what’s true. If accurate, good for her, and good for American.
Tales of White House demons isn’t new. Some paranormal buffs believe it’s the most haunted building in America. Legends abound, such as the ghost of William Henry Harrison who died a month after his inauguration. Eleanor Roosevelt once claimed to have heard President Lincoln’s ghost pacing the hallways. As the tale goes, Winston Churchill refused to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom after seeing a ghost beside the fireplace. History does attest that Jane Pierce, the wife of President Franklin Pierce, invited spiritualists to the White House to hold seances so she could talk to her dead son. After the death of her 11-year-old child Willie, Mary Lincoln, enamored with spiritualism, also held seances to communicate with her departed child. Abraham Lincoln himself attend one such séance.
I don’t doubt that the White House has had demons in it, claiming territorial rights, based on the evidence above. In addition, Bill Clinton invited demons of lust into the Oval Office, during his trysts with Monica Lewinsky. Nancy Reagan’s embrace of astrology, especially her relationship with psychic Joan Quigley, brought in more evil spirits. But before we point fingers at Presidents and occult presidential shenanigans, we all need to get the demons out of our where we live and how we live.
